Large numbers of British quarry specimens consist of what geologists describe as massive quartz. Instead of forming large individual crystals within open cavities, countless microscopic crystals grew tightly together, creating dense solid masses.
At first glance these rocks may appear relatively plain. However, cutting or polishing often reveals a fascinating crystalline interior filled with subtle textures, translucency and natural patterns.
