Quartz has formed repeatedly throughout Earth history. Some individual quartz grains found in ancient rocks are billions of years old, while other quartz formed much more recently in geological terms.
Why one age does not fit every specimen
A mineral grain, the rock containing it and the deposit where that rock is later found may each have different geological ages. A responsible description therefore depends on known provenance and evidence.
